may 25, drawing for the "Framed" show

i made this drawing today for a big group show that's going to be at Mokah Art Gallery (in Deep Ellum) on July 16th, it's called FRAMED and is going to be composed of around 100 artists that are/have been affiliated with Mokah... we each submit any 2D work, as long as it's contained within a 8'' by 10'' frame. i wanted to make a sketch of a girl that makes her body seem as though it's moving and shifting 'in and out of herself'...and in and out of her exterior as a meek and passive girl into her other layers of expression and strength, i kind of made a self portrait without realizing it

started one of the four new, large paintings that will be in the show. so far, i'm thinking that they'll be more painterly like this, (-maybe not as thick, with their components stuck in their places). instead, i want them to be 'washed with movement'. there will be wispy, subtle hue variation and splashes of dark, densely saturated color. juxtaposition of the serene with the aggressive and eerie are a running theme that's present in most of my paintings... nice and creepy, thats how we like it! haha. probably comes from my (literally), lifelong fascination with alice and wonderland and stories like it (whimsical and sweet mixed with the strange and sometimes, foreboding ). sugary paint/eerie marks

just started a new lil experiment today... okay, so I've always loved this red painting but its proportions have also always bothered me a little bit, (I either have wanted the falling, large red area to be lower in some places or higher..). Anyways, I think adding a second part on top of the painting could get rid of this problem ("problem" in my mind, i guess), and make it overall, a more arresting piece. the new, smaller second painting is exactly one half the size of the original red, so ultimately, will be a third of it, (which also, will help calm my craziness in way of a nice feeling proportion :) ) it'll look better in the show, too

anyways, those first two images above are just the first times I've begun this painting, which will need to worked up in a lot of layers, like I used to paint. hooraw! dont fall asleep on me yet! oh yes my pet, there is more

the blue one is coming around! it'll be put in the front of the show across from the other large, red one that also looks like the paint is being washed and blown around.. (the one called, "fruit punch")

may 2- Anthro Art Walk (sat, apr. 30)

some of the artists, (including me, i got dressed literally in the dark that morning ok) at our anthro had an Art Walk this past saturday. A few of my paintings were in front of the store which was great.. -I got to have a lot of people see some of my paintings and there were even a good number of people interested in buying work from me :) so all in all, a good day

may 2- anthro, spring home/kitchen concept

While getting to help visual, I 'white-washed' lots and lots of large canvas sections with gesso, then made more a of a dry-brush second coat. Then, when the gesso was dry I drew blue lines, (a perpendicular, red line was later added by the visual intern on the left side of the sections) to make them look like big pieces of notebook paper :) Some quick recipe notes were sketched in in a few random places...the concept is to make big, slight-crumbled and well-used looking recipe notes in the kitchen section. Flour was an inspiration for the kitchen section this spring, also; I like that the pieces of 'notebook paper' look like they might have some flour that was accidentally dropped on them, (which is what my cookbooks and recipe notes usually end up looking like after I've cooked while using them). I brushed the gesso on to look messy but balanced, (it felt like i was at home working on one of my paintings :) ).
